Hong Kong Wallingford
Hong Kong has always been obsessed with all things sweet so it’s no surprise that the cupcake craze is still going strong. With delicious new bakeries opening everywhere, we’ve decided to let you in on our secret to instant cupcake-gratification with a roundup of the best home-based cupcake businesses in Hong Kong.
Who they are: Ascia Wallingford’s love of cupcakes inspired her to open her own specialty cupcake business that allows you to create your own bespoke creations. Simply choose what base, frosting and filling you would like and she’ll make it.
The concept: Rather than overdosing you with thick layers of frosting and cake, Wallingford’s decision to keep her cupcakes bite-sized gives you the freedom to try as many as you want (within reason, of course).
The key to Sakura’s popular “Drunken” cupcakes is the liquor frosting that pairs perfectly with their airy cupcake bases. Be adventurous in your choice of frosting as Sakura offers everything from cardamom and green tea to Limoncello, tequila and sake.
Signature cupcakes: Sakura cupcakes have recently introduced new flavour combinations of the month. Try the chocolate cupcakes filled and frosted with salted caramel for October (HK).
Who they are: niche is another cute cupcake business started up by two friends — netball player and foodaholic Vanessa Cuvelier and gourmet food connoisseur Jessica Cheng. Their innovative and mouthwatering cupcakes reflect their own mixed Asian and Western background.
The concept: niche’s cupcake concept is very much about incorporating organic materials and unique flavours with an East-meets-West edge as can be seen in their “envy” pandan cupcake with vanilla buttercream frosting. A haven for all the vegans out there, all of niche’s cupcakes can be made gluten-free or vegan upon request.
Signature cupcakes: The “Teaser” banana cupcake with malteser dulce de leche cream cheese and “S’mores” chocolate cupcake with bruleed meringue frosting, marshmallows and chocolate.
All cupcakes are HK$25 each with a minimum order of six and HK$15 each for mini cupcakes with a minimum of 12 per flavour.
Who they are: Rebecca Wong of baked. has always had a passion for baking. Wanting to provide people with quality home-baked goods minus the fluff, she bakes everything from scratch with no added preservatives.
The concept: Inspired by a red velvet cake she had at a wedding in the United States a few years back, Wong decided to recreate the recipe into a scrumptious Red Velvet cupcake.
