Professional and Personal Interests
An avid reader, Joy Meyer ’78, assistant professor of education, has spearheaded the Young Authors program at Trinity since 1998, which draws participants from Christian elementary schools in the area to share their own work and gain appreciation for reading. After earning a bachelor’s degree in music with a minor in education and theology from the College, she taught sixth grade for 11 years and coordinated a learning resource program for Calvin Christian Elementary School in South Holland, Illinois, before accepting a position as an adjunct professor at the College in 1997.
Meyer pursued her passion for reading and teaching in her graduate work at Chicago State University, where she received a master of arts in diagnosis and remediation of reading disabilities in 1983. Her graduate degree was invaluable during the three months she spent tutoring a student suffering the effects of a traumatic brain injury in 1987.
She joined the full-time faculty in 2000 and began writing curriculum and teaching classes for the adult studies program two years later. Meyer is immersed in the lives of her students in her varied roles as director of teacher education and certification officer; she is also a former education department chair.
She has found her niche at Trinity, which she believes “provides an excellent education from a Christian perspective. I try to impact each student I meet and teach so they are challenged to grow as a professional.
“My main goals are to inspire all students to use best practices in their teaching, to encourage [them] to use their gifts and talents to bring out the best in their own students, and to lead students through the maze of certification details, ” said Meyer.
She views the classroom as a place where each student brings his or her own unique experiences to the learning environment, and seeks to help students learn by “challenging assumptions they may have about others, the teaching profession and even about themselves.”
Meyer finds satisfaction in seeing students in clinical practice gain new perspectives and use “differentiated strategies to impact student learning.” She incorporates technology into her teaching, recognizing the extensive applications for learning that technology offers. Her dissertation focused on the impact preservice training had on Trinity alumni and their perceived ability apply and integrate technology standards in their teaching.
