Even if you are not planning on practicing for the Olympic Games and you prefer watching dragon boat races from the shore, there are plenty of possibilities for you to exercise and enjoy sports in Hong Kong. There are associations for almost all sports in Hong Kong – from athletics and swimming to every form of martial arts.
If you would rather go for a regular evening work-out, you can find numerous fitness centers and private clubs for practicing sports in Hong Kong. Hong Kong also offers what might easily be the most scenic public golf courses you have ever seen.
Sports in Hong Kong: Sports Clubs
Your options to do sports in Hong Kong, on your own or together with others, are numerous. There are amateur associations for most sports, which will help you find a sports club or team close to your home. These associations include the South China Athletic Association, the Hong Kong Basketball Association, and the Hong Kong Hockey Association, amongst many others.
Hong Kong’s excellent golfing facilities are usually only open to members of the related golf clubs. However, as a visitor, you might be allowed to play for an additional fee. Hong Kong’s public golf course was designed by Gary Player and is located off Sai Kung on the island of Kau Sai Chau, which offers very scenic views. The course has comprehensive club house facilities and an instruction center. It’s the perfect way to experience sports in Hong Kong!
Most of the clubs and associations mentioned above have offers for children as well as adults. Sports in Hong Kong also play a very important role in both local and international schools. In fact, the majority of schools usually have excellent sports grounds and a variety of teams and clubs.
Sports in Hong Kong: Outdoor Sports
Despite its high population density, Hong Kong is actually a paradise for outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, and fishing. There are four long-distance hiking trails on Hong Kong territory, ranging from 70 to 100 kilometers in total. The MacLehose Trail, Lantau Trail, Hong Kong Trail and Wilson Trail cover beautiful and scenic areas and are an ideal way to enjoy sports in Hong Kong.
